The Cabrillo Bridge (Laurel Street Overcrossing) leading into the west side of Balboa Park will be closed to vehicles on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 10 until 5 the following morning, according to Caltrans. If needed, a fourth closure will be scheduled on Monday night, Nov. 3, during the same hours.
The closures are necessary to allow crews to prepare and paint the concrete barriers as part of the $38 million Cabrillo Bridge Retrofit and Rehabilitation Project.
Motorists leaving Balboa Park after 10 p.m. will be directed to exit from the east side of the park onto Park Boulevard.
Pedestrian access will be accommodated via escort through the work zone.
Construction began last year to seismically strengthen the bridge and replace deteriorated concrete and steel. Exterior bridge scaffolding was removed earlier this month. Temporary concrete barriers along SR-163 will be removed and the striping returned to the original configuration by the end of November. Crews are expected to complete the remaining interior bridge work in early 2015.
