Irving Gill’s Architecture in Bankers Hill

Irving GillLocal historians Sarai & Paul Johnson will offer insights into the genius of Irving Gill through his creative processes, including recently discovered and previously unknown c.1908 glass-plate photographs of his buildings and interiors. The Marston House, located on Seventh Avenue at the north end of Balboa Park is itself a crucial part of an exhibition featuring Gill.

Get a glimpse of the exhibition and the interior architecture, illuminating art photography, photo postcards, and rare Gill-designed redwood furniture on display at the exhibition

Do you have memories of Starlight Bowl?

Meet Steve Stopper, a driving force behind Save Starlight’s initiative. This starloghtgroup of activists and volunteers are working to restore, revive and revitalize Starlight Bowl—an open-air amphitheater in the heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park. The Bowl has been closed since 2012, and has fallen into disrepair.

They envision a venue for open-air performances, concerts, cinema, festivals, plays, community events, and musical theater.

Be one of the first to hear their story.

Start the New Year with Neighbors

First meeting of 2017 — Monday, January 16round tables
San Diego Indoor Sports Club
3030 Front Street
(from First Avenue turn west on Palm,
then right on Front)

Socialize at 6 — meeting begins at 6:30

Last January the BHCG kicked off the year with an opportunity to hear more about issues important to our neighborhood. Organizations familiar with these topics hosted round tables. Attendees rotated among the tables throughout the 90 minute meeting.

This year the BHCG will provide another opportunity to learn more about the changes and challenges taking place in our neighborhood, who is involved in the decision making and how to include your opinions.

We’ve selected these top issues and organizations from Bankers Hill for round table discussions at our Monday, January 16 meeting. Are you interested in several? Don’t worry…you’ll have time to participate at multiple tables throughout the evening.

— The Bankers Hill representatives to the Uptown Community Parking District will tell you about their plans to improve parking and maintain sidewalks, crosswalparking meterks and pedestrian safety. Share with them how you’d spend several hundred-thousand dollars still in the coffers. Bankers Hill committee chair, Doug Scott and other representatives of the parking group will be waiting for your comments.

— The Friends of Maple Canyon (FOMP) will host information about future plans for creating a more beautiful neighborhood asset. Improvements and changes are coming to one of the most popular canyons and walking trails in Bankers Hill.

— Ever wonder about the history of Bankers Hill? What are all those architectural styles and britt scrippswho lived in those homes? Amie Hayes from Save Our Heritage Organization (SOHO) will host a table offering the secrets to Bankers Hill. (secrets?!?)

— Would you like to have a say in what happens in Balboa Park along Sixth Avenue? This area is called the “West Mesa” and there’s a committee that has the ability to make suggestions to the city. Benches, recreation facilities, trash cans and the impact of events like marathons and other uses of the West Mesa will be discussed. Bruce Dammann is a dedicated neighbor interested in improving this area of the park.

— We’ll be looking for your ideas to improve the quality of life in our neighborhood. What do you want the BHCG to share with the “powers that be”. Show up, speak up and learn how to participate in the BHCG Board and Steering Committee. Ann Garwood will be spearheading the discussion at this table.

There’s something for everyone!
Resolve to be involved this year!

Get It Done

As discussed at our last community meeting:

The city of San Diego has developed an app for your cell phone to report many violations directly.  To name a few things you can report:

Do you have a Business in Bankers Hill?

And most important – do you think parking has an impact on your business?

Monday night, October 17th – at the Bankers Hill Community Group Meeting – we will be voting in the next “business member” to the Bankers Hill Community Parking Group who also serves on the Uptown Parking Committee.

Two meetings a month and you can make a difference with a basic commitment.

There is money to make changes – we just need the right people to help us do it.  Call Elizabeth Hannon, the COO of the Uptown Parking Advisory Group on Monday for more details.  (619) 794-8612

Don’t complain – take some action make a difference!

You’re invited!

Our friends at UCSD Health are celebrating 50 years of caring on September 24 from 9am-1pm at the Jacobs Medical Center, 9300 Campus Point Drive in La Jolla.

Happy birthday from the BHCG!!!
